Freiburg Minster
Gothic church with a delicately filigreed spire — the city's landmark.
Freiburg feels as if someone transplanted a slice of the south into Germany. It's one of the sunniest cities in the country, and you notice it everywhere: in the busy squares in front of the Minster, in the market bustle beneath the Gothic portals, in the easygoing mood of the lanes. Through the old town run the Bächle, narrow medieval water channels — legend says that whoever accidentally steps in one will marry a Freiburger. Above it all stands the Minster tower with its delicately filigreed spire, and right behind the old town the Black Forest begins with the Schlossberg. The Minster, Konviktstraße, Augustinerplatz and Schlossberg are just minutes apart on foot — perfect for a walking tour where you experience more than you tick off.

Getting there and the best time to visit: Freiburg sits on the Rhine Valley Railway and is superbly connected — you're here in about 45 minutes from Basel, roughly an hour from Karlsruhe, and around two hours from Frankfurt on the ICE. From the main station it's about a ten-minute walk into the old town, and you won't need a car here. As one of Germany's sunniest cities, Freiburg is a great destination almost year-round — at its best from April to October, when the squares are full and the Bächle are flowing. Advent has its own charm with the Christmas market around the town hall.
What makes Freiburg special: the Bächle, little runnels that have flowed through the old town since the Middle Ages — once built to supply water, today a landmark and a children's attraction all at once. The Minster tower, whose openwork stone spire is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and which the art historian Jacob Burckhardt once declared the most beautiful tower in all of Christendom. And the setting: the Schlossberg rises just behind the old town, and with the Schauinsland a Black Forest summit of over 1,200 meters waits practically on the doorstep — cable car included. Look closely and you'll also spot the lane-paving mosaics made of Rhine pebbles that mark the respective trade in front of many shops.
